INRiM carries out and promotes research in metrology and develops the most advanced measurement standards and methods and related technologies, fulfilling the functions of a primary metrological institute according to Law No. 273 of 11 August 1991. To this end, as a signatory to international agreements on metrology, upon delegation of the competent institutions, and similarly to the metrological institutes of other countries, INRiM creates and maintains the national standards for units of measurement.

The capacity of the associated partner, INRiM, is quite high due to its status as a leading institution in metrology research in the country and its international recognition. The institute possesses broad expertise in metrology and plays a significant role in the development, investigation, and dissemination of measurement standards. Today, there are numerous national and international research programs focusing on environmental preservation and the development of sustainable technologies. In this context, metrology plays a crucial role by providing the expertise for the laser interferometry techniques in sensing applications, reliable measurement methods, and tools, which form the basis for these studies.
